T-shirt Yarn Easter Basket free crochet pattern.

Skill Level: Easy

Measurements 6.5” in diameter x 4.5” height

Gauge 2 St = 1” and 2 Rows = 1” in KST (your gauge may depend on the thickness of your yarn, so you may have to decrease or increase the size of the hook to match the gauge).

What you will need:

T-shirt yarn (weight 6 / super bulky weight), 100 m (109 yards) / 330 g (11.5oz) – main color– 109 yards (100 m).

T-shirt yarn (weight 6 / super bulky weight), 100 m (109 yards) / 330 g (11.5oz) – contrast color – 54 yards (50 m) I used t-shirt yarn from my shop KNITZNPURLZ

Crochet hook 10mm/N15

Stitch marker

Yarn Needle

Felt fabric for nose 1” x 1”

Scrap yarn medium weight black for whiskers and eyes – 3 yards (2 m)

Abbreviations, stitch knowledge:

ch – chain

cc – contrast color

dc – double crochet

hdc – half double crochet

KST – knit stitch or waistcoat stitch (KST works as a single crochet but instead of going under two loops you insert hook between the “legs” (“v”) of the next stitch, then work as a regular single crochet.

mc – main color

sc – single crochet

st (s) – stitch(es)

sl st – slip stitch

() – repeat content of parenthesis

Let’s get crocheting!

Note: Baskets worked up starting at the bottom and up in spiral way, do not join rounds unless indicated in the pattern. When changing colors, do not cut the thread and carry it along on the back. You may also refer to color chart for easy color pattern changing.

Basket bottom:

Round 1: With MC make magic ring and ch 1.

Round 2:. Sc 6 in magic ring, sl st into first stitch of the ring, tighten the ring by pulling the tail end (6 sts).

Round 3: 2 sc into each st around (12 sts).

Working in spiral way, place the stitch marker at the beginning of the round for easy round counting.

Round 4: (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st) around (18 sts).

Round 5: (1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) around (24 sts).

Round 6: (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts) around (30 sts).

Round 7: (1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts) around (36 sts). You should have a circle of approximately 6” in diameter. See photo 1.

Round 8: Sc into each st through the back loop AND third bar of the stitch. The row will curl up forming the wall of the basket.

Basket body:

Continue working in spiral way without joining rounds. Entire body is worked up in KST. Follow instruction here or chart to create color pattern.

Round 1: mc 14, cc 8, mc 14. means using main color to work KST in next 14 sts, then use contrast color to work KST in next 8 sts, then use main color to work KST in next 14 sts. Then follow the instruction as below

Round 2: mc 13, cc 10, mc 13.

Round 3-6: mc 12, cc 12, mc 12.

Round 7: mc 13 sts, cc 10, mc 13.

Round 8: mc 14 ,cc 8, mc 14.

Round 9: sl st with mc in 14 sts, sl st with cc in next 8 sts, sl st with mc in next 14 sts. See photo 2.

Ears:

With cc ch 7.

Round 1: sc in back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and next 4 sts, 3 sc in last st, work across the opposite side of the foundation ch, sc in next 5 sts. (13 sts). Cut cc.

Round 2: Join mc at first sc of previous round and ch 1 (counts as a st), sc in next 1 st, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts. (14sts) Leave a length of yarn for sewing pieces together. See photo 3.

Make another ear by repeating round 1-2.

Handle:

With MC ch 20.

Round 1: sc in back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and next 17 sts, 3 sc in the last st of the chain, work across the opposite side of the foundation ch, sc in next 18 sts. (39sts)

Assembly:

Cut the circle from felt fabric ⅜ “ diameter, sew it in the place of a nose. With medium weight black yarn sew through the basket to make whiskers and eyes. Sew in the ears and the handle. Weave ends and finish off.
