If you follow me on my blog or on any social media accounts you probably know that I have 2 boys. These kids have so many toys and so many books! I never could think of 2 little kids can have so much stuff! And if i can be completely honest my own things could be better organized. My yarn stash for instance. I can go on forever about my struggle to declutter our small NYC apartment but at the end keeping my home organized feels sometimes like never ending battle. After researching this topic on the web I came to a solution to try to store as many things in baskets, it works great for us so far. I don’t like plastic bins because they look so dull in my apartment, so I decided to crochet some! I’ve crocheted some other holiday baskets before like this Valentine’s crochet basket or Bunny Basket for Easter. I even made matching placemats to some of my baskets for the dining table. But this time I needed something bigger and more functional. I had plenty of solid color baskets in my house and I decided to go for a color combo that would be a good match for my furniture. I chose grey and off white colors to add little lighter shades to my black furniture. I got so obsessed with the chevron crochet basket that I even have an idea how I can stash my yarn in a cute way by color coding my crochet baskets. Like I can store all my yellow and blue colored yarn in matching color baskets! You’ve got an idea!

T-shirt yarn

Tshirt yarn makes a basket sturdy and keeps its shape. To make the chevron basket even sturdier you can add a wooden base. I recommend using a wooden base that has 72 holes so you don’t need to adjust the amount of stitches before you start to crochet the walls of the basket.

Let’s get crocheting!

Note: Choose the type of the bottom from either crochet circle bottom or wooden base. Baskets worked up starting at the either crochet circle bottom or crochet around wooden base and up in spiral way, do not join rounds unless indicated in the pattern. When changing colors, do not cut the thread and carry it along on the back. The color is always changed with two loops on the hook. So you will change color when completing the last yarn over of the last stitch of previous color. You may also refer to color chart for easy color pattern changing. If you choose wooden base start with section 2 Crochet around wooden basket base. If you choose crochet circle bottom start section 1 Crochet basket circle bottom.

Crochet basket circle bottom:

Round 1: With MC and 10 mm hook make magic ring and ch 1.

Round 2:. Sc 6 in magic ring, sl st into first stitch of the ring, tighten the ring by pulling the tail end (6 sts).

Round 3: 2 KST into each st around (12 sts).

Working in spiral way, place the stitch marker at the beginning of the row for easy row counting.

Round 4: (2 KST into first st, 1 KST in next st) all the way around (18 sts).

Round 5: (1 KST in next 2 sts, 2 KST in next st) all the way around (24 sts).

Round 6: (2 KST in one st, 1 KST in next 3 sts) all the way around (30 sts).

Round 7: (1 KST in next 2 sts, 2 KST in next st, 1 KST in next 2 sts) all the way around (36 sts).

Round 8: (1 KST in next 4 sts, 2 KST in next st, 1 KST in next st) all the way around (42 sts).

Round 9: (1 KST in next 6 sts, 2 KST in next st) all the way around (48 sts).

Round 12: (1 KST in next 4 sts, 2 KST in next st, 1 KST in next 5 sts) all the way around (66 sts).

Round 13: (1 KST in next 6 sts, 2 KST in next st, 1 KST in next 4 sts) all the way around (72 sts). See photo 1.

Round 14: Sc in the back loop AND third loop of all 72 sts around, do not join the round, continue to work in a spiral way, pm for easy round counting. Continue to section 3 Basket wall.

Crochet around wooden basket base:

Round 1: With MC and 5 mm hook insert the hook through the holes of wooden base and work sc around wooden base. Note: If your wooden base has more than 72 holes, work 2 KST tog in various places to get 72 sts around. Last sc should be done in the same hole where yarn was joined to avoid gaps. With 10 mm hook continue to work in a spiral way, pm for easy round counting. Continue to section 3 Basket wall.

Basket wall:

Round 1: With MC work KST all around. Complete the last yarn over of the last KST by switching to CC. Do not cut MC, after color is changed, place yarn MC on the top of crocheted piece and continue to crochet with CC over it.

Note: Entire body is worked in KST. Follow instructions here or chart to create color pattern. For example cc 2, mc 9 means use contrasting color to work KST in next 2 sts, then use main color to work KST in next 9 sts.

Round 2: (cc 1, mc 11) 6 times. Round 3: (cc 2, mc 9, cc 1) 6 times. Round 4: (cc 3, mc 7, cc 2) 6 times. Round 5: (cc 4, mc 5, cc 3) 6 times. Round 6: (cc 5, mc 3, cc 4) 6 times. Round 7: (mc 1, cc 5) 12 times. Round 8: (mc 2, cc 9, mc 1) 6 times. Round 9: (mc 3, cc 7, mc 2) 6 times. Round 10: (mc 4, cc 5, mc 3) 6 times. Round 11: (mc 5, cc 3, mc 4) 6 times. Round 12: (cc 1, mc 5) 12 times. Round 13: (cc 2, mc 9, cc 1) 6 times.

Round 14: (begin handles) cc 3, mc 7, cc 5, mc ch 7, sk 7 (do not cut cc leave a lengthy loop, you will cut it later and weave the ends, See photo 3.) cc 5, mc 7, cc 5, mc 7, cc 5 , mc ch 7, sk 7 (do not cut cc leave a lengthy loop, you will cut it later and weave the ends, See photo 3.) cc 5, mc 7, cc 2.
