Rectangular crochet basket pattern

There are so many things laying down around my house, so I decided to get stuff organized! Crochet basket is a great option for storage children toys, keys, change and of course all my crochet supplies.

I used t-shirt yarn from my Etsy store of black, grey and cream color, I also added sew in leather handles, which made my baskets so cute and functional too.

The basket is worked starting at the rectangular base and worked upward in the continuous rounds with waistcoat stitch.

It measures 11.5”(L) x 6.5”(W) x 3”(H) but can be customized by increasing rows at the base and rounds on the sides.

What you will need:

  1. T-shirt yarn (6 super bulky weight, super chunky yarn) -109 yards (100 m). I used t-shirt yarn from my shop KNITZNPURLZ;

  2. Crochet hook – 10mm, N15;

  3. Stitch markers – 4;

  4. Leather handles – 2 (optional)

Or get a KIT that includes 100 meters t-shirt yarn of your choice, 2 leather sew in handles and PDF digital crochet pattern.

Abbreviations, Stitch knowledge:

  • Ch- chain;

  • St – stitch;

  • Sc- single crochet;

  • Sl St – slip stitch;

  • KST – knit stitch aka waistcoat stitch aka center single crochet stitch;

  • sc 2 tog – sc next 2 stitches together

  • PM – place marker.

NOTES:

Stitch markers are placed on the stitches where the increases will be made.

Gauge: 2 St = 1 inches and 2 Rows = 1 inches (your gauge may depend on the thickness of your yarn, so you may have to decrease or increase the size of the hook to match the gauge).

Let’s get crocheting!

Sides are worked in KST in rounds. Do not join at the end of the round and work in spiral way up. To avoid sides being too wide decrease 1 st in each corner.

7. Sc in the back loop AND 3d loop all the way around, decrease 1 st at each corner by sc 2tog, do not join the round, continue to work in a spiral way.

8-13. KST all the way around.

14. Sl st all the way around.

Finish off and weave ends. Sew 2 handles (optional).

Happy crocheting!

Irina.

      You can use regular yarn, but since the gauge will be way off, you’ll end up with very small basket. Also regular yarn won’t give you much of sturdiness. Hope this helps. Happy making!
